Reconnecting a disconnected bank

What to do when your bank connection needs attention

Why do bank connections disconnect?

From time to time, your bank connection through Plaid may need to be refreshed. This is completely normal and doesn't mean anything is wrong with your Spendify account. Common reasons include:

  • You changed your bank password. If you updated your online banking credentials, Plaid needs the new ones to keep syncing.

  • Your bank required a security update. Banks periodically rotate security tokens or update their systems, which can interrupt the connection.

  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA) changed. If you updated your MFA method (e.g., switched from SMS to an authenticator app), the connection may need to be re-established.

  • Your bank's systems were temporarily unavailable. Occasional outages on the bank's side can cause a disconnect that doesn't resolve on its own.

How to spot a disconnected bank

Spendify makes it easy to tell when a connection needs attention:

  • You'll see a warning indicator on the affected account on your Accounts screen.

  • You may receive a push notification letting you know a connection needs to be refreshed.

  • Transactions and balances for that account will stop updating until the connection is restored.

How to reconnect your bank

Getting back up and running only takes a minute:

  1. Open the Spendify app.

  2. Go to the Accounts screen.

  3. Tap on the account showing the warning indicator.

  4. Tap Reconnect or Fix Connection.

  5. You'll be taken through the Plaid flow β€” sign in with your current bank credentials.

  6. Complete any MFA steps your bank requires.

  7. Once signed in, the connection will be restored.

What happens after reconnecting

Once your bank is reconnected:

  • Transactions will resume syncing automatically. Any transactions that occurred while the bank was disconnected will be pulled in.

  • Your balances will update to reflect the latest information from your bank.

  • Your budgets, net worth, and other features that depend on this account will be back to normal.

Still having trouble?

If you've tried reconnecting and the issue persists, here are a few things to try:

  • Double-check your bank credentials by signing into your bank's website or app directly.

  • Wait a bit and try again. Sometimes bank outages take a little while to resolve.

  • Contact our support team. If the problem continues, reach out to us through the app β€” we can look into it and help get things sorted out.
